日中戦争は日本の侵略戦争である、と思い込んでいる人が日本でも非常に多いよう
ですが、これは歴史事実に反する迷信と云わなければなりません。
戦争のきっかけといわれる盧溝橋事件は、条約によって駐屯していた日本軍に中国軍が違法な発砲をしたことから起こりました。事件勃発の４日後に結ばれた現地停戦協定で「(中国)２９軍代表は日本軍に遺憾の意を表し、かつ責任者を処分し」と云っている通りです。
この紛争が本格戦争になったのは上海事件からですが、反日的な論調のニューヨーク・タイムスも「日本軍は中国軍によって文字通り衝突へと無理やり追い込まれていったのである」（８月３１日）書いているように、中国正規軍がわずか４千の海軍陸戦隊に対して総攻撃をかけてきたのです。
中国の領土内で戦ったのだから侵略に決まっていると考えるのは、国際法を知らない人と云うべきです。条約に基づき駐屯している軍に違法に攻撃を仕掛けるとそれは自国内であっても侵略行為です。日本国内に駐屯するアメリカ軍に自衛隊が違法攻撃を仕掛けたら、日本の侵略となるのです。こんな初歩もわきまえない論が横行しています。

The Second Sino-Japanese War Was Caused by China
It is generally believed that Japan was an aggressor nation against China for the Second Sino-Japanese War. This is a view not founded on the historical events, however. The Marco Polo Bridge Incident, the opening event of the conflict, was orchestrated by China; and the Shanghai Incident, which was the beginning of the full-scale war, was unilaterally initiated by China.
The facts introduced in this article explain how the conflict was initiated and escalated.
Japanese government during the conflict proposed peace plans many times which never included territorial or special interest requirements. But they were all rejected by the Chiang Kai-shek government and therefore the conflict continued.
